The Trip.com Group has released its first-half 2021 data on nightlife economy consumption trends in mainland China, shedding light on this growing travel consumption segment.

What is the Night Economy?

The nocturnal economy refers to all economic activity that occurs between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. in the service industry, covering a wide range of business activities, including transportation, attractions, catering, tourism, entertainment and more.

Nighttime attraction bookings up 469% over last year

On average, Chinese consumers made 1.3 nighttime attraction reservations in the first half of 2021, spending RMB187 per person. Nighttime attraction bookings made on the Trip.com Group Ctrip platform increased 469% from 2020 and 120% from 2019. 40% of nighttime attraction bookings were for attractions within travel radius short. .

Female tourists book more night attractions

According to data from the Trip.com group, women make up 53% of tourists booking night attractions, 6% more than their male counterparts.

Gen Z is a driver of nightly tourism sales

Post-90s consumers make up 34% of tourists booking overnight travel products, while post-80s and post-00s users make up 29% and 12%, respectively. Data from the Trip.com group reveals that Gen Z is becoming a major driver of nightlife consumption and suggests companies develop more engaging and youthful travel products.

Tourists tend to consume more at night

The demand for more immersive nighttime tourism products is also fueling the secondary consumption that tourists bring to destinations. Although reservation rates are generally lower at night, secondary consumption is often higher than during the day.

Shanghai tourists are the main contributors to the night economy

Tourists from these 10 provinces/cities are the main night consumers in the economy: Shanghai, beijing, jiangsu, Guangdong, Henan, Shanxi, Zhejiang, Hubei, Sichuanand Chongqing.

Night tourists share more online, generating popular content

According to data from the Ctrip Community page, content related to nightlife tourism increased by 130% in the first half of 2021 compared to last year. Hashtags such as “night tour”, “night snack”, “night market”, “Huangpu River night tour”, “Qinhuai River night tour” are among the most searched on the platform.
